A core principle of Playcentre is the idea of Child-initiated, Adult-supported play. This principle develops the child's sense's of empowerment, belonging and self-belief.
Child initiated play allows the child to set their own pace for learning and to explore fully the activity they are involved in. The adult supports this by ensuring the materials required are available and by asking questions to further the child's interest and understanding.
One of the mantra's of Playcentre is "Play is a child's work" which both reflects how much concentration and attention children put into their play but also the important role play has in supporting and promoting a child's development.
The Stuff of Childhood is an excellent article on the importance of play to developement an the essential role of real tools and equipment.
